“I can’t breathe!”: The last words Eric Garner spoke as he was dying on a NY sidewalk.
I can’t believe it happened again: no indictment for an unarmed black man killed at the hands of those who serve and protect I can’t sleep . . . again: Injustice keeps me up at night I can’t do anything: I am a middle class white woman in KY I can’t do nothing: I must do something I can’t ignore the cries: of Trayvon, Michael, Eric, … I can’t stay silent: I must speak out, preach, pray I can’t imagine: the pain of the victims’ loved ones I can’t pretend: to know what it is like to live in fear because of the color of my skin I can’t believe: that this is happening in 2014 in the “Land of the Free” I can’t know: all the facts, all the feelings I can’t have faith: in that which is not Truth, Justice, Peace I can’t fear: that God is not present I can’t wait: patience is running thin I can’t hide: my eyes, my ears, my voice I can’t cry: Jesus weeps “I can’t breathe . . .” But I can. I must. We must. Guide me Great Jehovah, Tell me not what I can’t do but I can . . . to speak Truth to Power, to stand up to injustice, to be still and know. Use my voice, my hands, my feet, to bring peace to a broken world. May it be so. #blacklivesmatter
